Every image and file on your website lives in one place: the Media Library. Here's how to work with it.

Uploading images

  • In the admin menu, go to Media → Add New.
  • Drag and drop your image file into the upload area, or click Select Files to browse your computer.
  • Once uploaded, click on the image to add helpful details: a Title and Alt Text (see below — this one matters).
  • You can also upload while editing You don't have to go to the Media Library first — while editing a page or post, click any image block and choose "Upload" to add a new photo right there.

    Always add alt text

Alt text is a short written description of an image, used by screen readers (for visitors with visual impairments) and by search engines. It's one of the easiest ways to make your site more accessible and more findable.

  • Click an image in your Media Library.
  • Find the Alternative Text field.
  • Write a plain, specific description — for example, "Team meeting in the Nairobi office conference room," not just "photo" or "image1.jpg."
  • Replacing an image already used on your site

  • Open the page or post that contains the image.
  • Click directly on the image.
  • Look for a Replace option in the toolbar that appears, or click the image and choose a new one from your Media Library or upload a fresh file.
  • Update or Publish the page to save the change.
  • Screenshot placeholder

    Organizing your media

For sites with many images, you can filter the Media Library by file type or upload date using the dropdown filters at the top of the Media screen. Give files clear, descriptive titles as you upload them — future-you will thank present-you.

    Deleting media

  • In the Media Library, click the image you want to remove.
  • Click Delete Permanently.
  • Unlike pages, media deletion is immediate Deleted media doesn't go to a recoverable trash the way pages and posts do. Before deleting, check whether the image is still used anywhere on your site — removing an image still in use will leave a broken gap where it appeared.

    Image optimization tips

Large image files slow your website down. A few simple habits keep things fast:

  • Resize before uploading. A photo straight from a modern phone or camera is often far larger than needed. Aim for images no wider than about 2000 pixels for full-width photos.
  • Compress when possible. Free tools like Squoosh or TinyPNG can shrink a file's size with no visible quality loss — worth doing for any photo over 1MB.
  • Use JPG for photos, PNG for graphics with transparency. JPGs are typically much smaller for real-world photos.
  • Don't worry too much. Your site includes automatic image optimization behind the scenes, so this is a nice-to-have habit, not a strict requirement.
